This article describes how to resolve a problem where users can't sign in to Windows until the incorrect driver is removed.

NI R Series Multifunction RIO Device Drivers will drop support for Windows 7 (32- and 64-bit), Windows Server 2008 R2, and all 32-bit Windows operating systems starting in 2021. Versions of this product that ship after May 1, 2021, will not install or run on these operating systems.

Summary

If you use a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) smart card or any multifunction device that uses PIV smart cards that rely on the Windows Inbox Smart Card Minidriver, you may have received an incorrect driver update. When you try to use a smart card to authenticate to Windows, you might receive error messages such as 'This smart card cannot be used' or 'The operation requires a different smart card.'

The incorrect update contains the 'FEITIAN - SmartCard - 1.0.0.3' provider app that installs the Feitian xPass Smart Card driver. This is a legitimate, signed update that was published by a verified partner. However, it was inadvertently targeted to a broader set of devices than it was originally intended for.

The driver has been pulled from the Windows Update publishing system. To mitigate any adverse effects, any user who received the update has to manually roll back to the Windows inbox driver. For more information, see the 'Resolution' section.

Symptoms

You observe one or more of the following symptoms:

You try to sign in to Windows by using a PIV smart card or a device (such as a YubiKey) that supports PIV smart cards and relies on the Windows Inbox Smart Card Minidriver. However, you can't sign in.
You try to sign in to Windows by using a non-Feitian-branded PIV smart card device. However, you can't sign in. If the device supports Fast Identity Online (FIDO) capabilities, such as U2F or FIDO2, those capabilities continue to work.
The invalid xPass Smart Card driver doesn't correctly interface with other non-Feitian devices that rely on the inbox driver. This generates error messages such as 'This smart card cannot be used.'

The following example shows the results of the certutil -scinfo command that runs on an affected computer. The certificates were generated as part of a Microsoft AD CS enrollment. However, they're no longer able to interface with the YubiKey PIV device after the xPass Smart Card driver is installed.

Cause

The Feitian xPass Smart Card driver version 1.0.0.3 specifies SCFILTERCID_2777BE07-6993-4513-BD80-C184FCB0AB2D as a compatible identifier in the .inf file of its driver package. However, the Windows inbox smart card minidriver for PIV smart cards (Identity Device (NIST SP 800-73 [PIV])) uses the same compatible identifier. If you connect a non-Feitian device that uses the inbox driver to your computer, Windows recognizes the Feitian driver as compatible. Windows downloads, installs, and loads the Feitian driver.

Resolution

If the Feitian xPass Smart Card driver has been installed on your computer, you have to remove it to revert to the inbox Identity Device (NIST SP 800-73 [PIV]) driver. After you remove the xPass Smart Card driver, Windows automatically loads the inbox driver for the device.

All drivers support the following OS. Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7 with Service Pack 1 (SP1). WBF (Windows Biometric Framework) drivers are the main drivers for most applications that use SecuGen fingerprint readers and devices containing SecuGen fingerprint USB sensors. Determine whether your computer is affected

In Settings, select Updates & Security > View update history. You should be able to identify the driver update in the list.

Manually delete the driver

To manually remove the driver, follow these steps:

Connect the smart card device to the computer.
Start Device Manager. You can start Device Manager from Control Panel, or by pressing Windows + R, and then entering devmgmt.msc.
Select Smart cards, right-click xPass Smart Card, and then select Uninstall device.
When you're prompted, select Delete the driver software for this device, and then select Uninstall.

Create a script to delete the driver

To automate the driver removal, create a script that can run in a batch file. The script identifies the driver .inf file name and uses PnPUtil.exe to delete the driver. The script can delete the driver even if a smart card or smart card device isn't connected to the computer. To create and use such a script, follow these steps:

Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, and then tap Change PC settings. (If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, click Settings, and then click Change PC settings.)
Tap or click Update and recovery, and then tap or click Windows Update.
Tap or click Choose how updates get installed.
Under Important updates, choose Install updates automatically (recommended).

If a driver has been signed by a publisher that has verified its identity with a certification authority, you can be confident that the driver comes from that publisher and hasn't been changed.

If you see any of the following notifications when you're installing a driver, you should stop the installation and go to your device manufacturer's website to get a digitally signed driver for your device.

This topic discusses keyboard and mouse HID client drivers. Keyboards and mice represent the first set of HID clients that were standardized in the HID Usage tables and implemented in Windows operating systems.

Keyboard and mouse HID client drivers are implemented in the form of HID Mapper Drivers. A HID mapper driver is a kernel-mode WDM filter driver that provides a bidirectional interface for I/O requests between a non-HID Class driver and the HID class driver. The mapper driver maps the I/O requests and data protocols of one to the other.

Windows provides system-supplied HID mapper drivers for HID keyboard, and HID mice devices.

Architecture and overview

The following figure illustrates the system-supplied driver stacks for USB keyboard and mouse/touchpad devices.

The HID class driver creates a PDO for each keyboard or mouse TLC. Complex HID devices (more than 1 TLC) are exposed as multiple PDOs created by HID class driver. For example, a keyboard with an integrated mouse might have one collection for the standard keyboard controls and a different collection for the mouse.
The keyboard or mouse hid client mapper drivers are loaded on the appropriate FDO.
The HID mapper drivers create FDOs for keyboard and mouse, and load the class drivers.

Important notes:

Vendor drivers are not required for keyboards and mice that are compliant with the supported HID Usages and top level collections.
Vendors may optionally provide filter drivers in the HID stack to alter/enhance the functionality of these specific TLC.
Vendors should create separate TLCs, that are vendor specific, to exchange vendor proprietary data between their hid client and the device. Avoid using filter drivers unless critical.
The system opens all keyboard and mouse collections for its exclusive use.
The system prevents disable/enabling a keyboard.
The system provides support for horizontal/vertical wheels with smooth scrolling capabilities.

Well, it turns out they did in fact take information from computers and took the lap.
Before you begin
Driver updates for Windows 10, along with many devices, such as network adapters, monitors, printers, and video cards, are automatically downloaded and installed through Windows Update. You probably already have the most recent drivers, but if you'd like to manually update or reinstall a driver, here's how:
If Windows doesn't find a new driver, you can try looking for one on the device manufacturer's website and follow their instructions. Reinstall the device driver. In the search box on the taskbar, enter device manager, then select Device Manager. Right-click (or press and hold) the name of the device, and select Uninstall. Restart your PC. These details can make it easier for you to distinguish between similar devices that are connected to your computer, such as different mobile phones.
To have Windows automatically download recommended drivers and icons
You can check Windows Update at any time to see if it found new drivers and icons for your hardware, especially if you recently installed a new device. If you want to have Windows Update automatically check for the latest drivers and icons, here's how:

Even if you have Windows Update set to automatically download and install all important and recommended updates, you still might not be getting all of the updated drivers available for your devices. For instance, optional updates might include updated drivers that become available for hardware or devices you've already installed. Windows doesn't automatically download and install optional updates, but you will be notified when optional updates are available.
Desktop And Laptop Computers
To get all the available updates for your devices, periodically check Windows Update for all available updates, including optional updates. You can review the available updates and then select them from the list of updates that Windows finds for your computer. Here's how to do this:

This topic provides guidelines for deciding whether you should write a UWP app or a Windows desktop app to communicate with a USB device.
Windows provides API sets that you can use to write apps that talk to a custom USB devices. The API performs common USB-related tasks such as, finding the device, data transfers.
'Custom device' in this context means, a device for which Microsoft does not provide an in-box class driver. Instead, you can install WinUSB (Winusb.sys) as the device driver.
Choosing a programming model
If you install Winusb.sys, here are the programming model options:
Windows 8.1 provides a new namespace: Windows.Devices.Usb. The namespace cannot be used in earlier version of Windows. Other Microsoft Store resources are here: UWP app.
Before Windows 8.1, apps that were communicating through Winusb.sys, were desktop apps written by using WinUSB Functions. In Windows 8.1, the API set has been extended. Other Windows desktop app resources are here: Windows desktop app.
The strategy for choosing the best programming model depends on various factors.
Will your app communicate with an internal USB device?
The APIs are primarily designed for accessing peripheral devices. The API can also access PC internal USB devices. However access to PC internal USB devices from a UWP app is limited to a privileged app that is explicitly declared in device metadata by the OEM for that PC.
Will your app communicate with USB isochronous endpoints?
If your app transmits data to or from isochronous endpoints of the device, you must write a Windows desktop app. In Windows 8.1, new WinUSB Functions have been added to the API set that allow a desktop app to send data to and receive data from isochronous endpoints.
Is your app a 'control panel' type of app?
UWP apps are per-user apps and do not have the ability to make changes outside the scope of each app. For these types of apps, you must write a Windows desktop app.
Is the USB device class supported classes by UWP apps?
Write a UWP app if your device belongs to one these device classes.
